Chicago teen rapper Chief Keef is in trouble with the law again, this time for allegedly driving under the influence of marijuana.
Keef, 18, whose real name is Keith Cozart, was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. on March 5 by officers in Highland Park. Cozart was pulled over in the 2600 block of Skokie Valley Road after officers noticed he had an expired registration on his 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Highland Park deputy chief George Pfutzenreuter said.
When police approached the car, they claim they noticed Cozart seemed impaired by drugs, and that they could smell burnt marijuana coming from inside of his car, Pfutzenreuter said.
Cozart later failed a sobriety test and was taken in to police custody, he said. He was charged with one count each of driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a valid driver’s license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and having an expired registration, Pfutzenreuter said.
He was held on a $300 bond and was released later that morning after posting bail, Pfutzenreuter said.
The arrest comes just weeks after he completed court-ordered drug rehab at the Promises Treatment Center in Malibu, Calif. The Englewood-born Cozart, who has a Northbrook residence in his name, pleaded guilty in November to a conditional discharge violation after he tested positive twice for drugs following a series of skirmishes with the law.
Those run-ins include a traffic arrest in May in which he was clocked driving 110 mph on the Edens Expressway. He was sentenced to 18 months probation, then served 20 days in jail for failing a previous drug test.
He was sentenced to 60 days in juvenile detention last year for violating probation on a gun conviction when he wielded a firearm in a music video. And he gained notoriety in 2012 for a gloating tweet sent from his account after the slaying of a rival Chicago rapper.
