The North Siders may be on the verge of adding some muscle to their lineup.
The Chicago Cubs reached a preliminary agreement with free agent Carlos Pena, according to the team. A source told the MLB.com the one-year deal is worth about $10 million.
Pena would fill the void left behind by Derrick Lee, and allow second year outfielder Tyler Colvin to remain in right field. The Cubs traded Lee to the Braves last August and Colvin filled in at first base off and on.
Pena hit only .196 last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, but a year before he led the American League with 39 home runs. He also won a Gold Glove in 2008.
The deal could be finalized on Wednesday.
