Chicago bomb technicians exploded a grenade found hanging from a light pole in Lincoln Park this morning, said police news affairs.
Police received a call at around 7 a.m. about a suspicious device in the area. Officials weren’t originally sure if the grenade, which was hanging from a pole on the 1900 block of North Clifton Avenue, was live.
Fire crews received a call to assist police for the suspicious package and issued a “precautionary” Level 1 HazMat response, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.
Foot and vehicle traffic was blocked to the area as police Bomb and Arson Unit officers investigated. At 8:20 a.m. the Bomb and Arson Unit detonated the apparent grenade, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.
There were no reported injures or people transported to hospitals, Rosado said.
General Iron Industries Inc. is listed at the address, according to a web directory, and officials declined to comment Tuesday morning. The business is a scrap iron and metal recycling plant.
