The Stanley Cup is heading to the Gay Pride Parade.
Chicago Blackhawks President John McDonough says he'll detour the Stanley Cup from the NHL draft in Los Angeles to the streets of East Lakeview Sunday, according to the Sun-Times' Michael Sneed.
Hawks defenseman Brent Sopel, along with his wife and four kids, will carry the cup along the Pride Parade route.
“The power of the Cup is incomprehensible, and we recognize the importance of doing this,” said McDonough to Sneed.
The Chicago Gay Hockey Association got the puck rolling for Lord Stanley’s appearance by offering the Blackhawks an invitation to join them.
Sopel says he plans to carry the Stanley Cup proud in honor of Brendan Burke, the son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, who was killed last year in a car accident. Brendan Burke died shortly after coming out about his sexuality.
“We teach our kids about accepting everybody. Tolerate everybody, to understand where everyone is coming from, “ said Sopel to Sneed.
