1 Dead, 7 Hurt in South Side Crash

Police investigating 3:45 p.m. crash at Kedzie, Archer as a crime scene

One person was killed and seven others injured following a multi-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in the Southwest Side Archer Heights neighborhood.

Witnesses at the intersection of Archer and Kedzie avenues said they saw a van going about 60 mph and weaving in and around other vehicles before the crash.

The van hit three vehicles and three pedestrians at the intersection and about 3:45 p.m. before coming to a stop at the middle of the intersection in a scene witnesses called "horrific."

The driver of the van was taken into custody and initially claimed that he wasn't injured but later complained of chest pains as he was being led to a squad car.  He was taken to an area hospital.

Four adults were also taken to hospitals, two to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and two to Mount Sinai Hospital.  Three of them were in serious-to-critical condition.

Another man, a pedestrian who was "literally run over," was transported in extremely critical and unstable condition and later died.

One child between 1 and 7 years old was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.  Three adults were taken in good-to-fair condition, two to Mt. Sinai and one to St. Anthony Hospital, Fire Media spokesman Quention Curtis said.

Police are investigating the crash as a crime scene.
