The mother and aunt of a high school student in Indiana have been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for apparently egging on a fight between the teen and another girl.
The fight took place March 15, but school officials found out about it Tuesday after a video of it, taken by another youth with a cell phone, was posted to YouTube. About 20 people were videotaped watching the fight outside an apartment building. School officials contacted police.
"The mom and aunt were obviously egging the girls on, verbally and physically," said police Cpl Lance Huish, according to the Post-Tribune. He noted that the women even moved the girls away from a wall to give them more room to fight.
Charged were the teen's mother, Stacey Crawford, and her aunt, Dana Crawford. Both teens in the 38-second video have been charged as juveniles with disorderly conduct.
Merrillville Schools Superintendent Anthony Lux said he had not been informed of the situation yet and could not comment on whether any action would be taken against the Merrillville High School students.
"It depends on if there is a connection to the school," Lux said. "I won't know until I know the details.
Some students said the school shouldn't impose any additional punishment.
"Why are you guys investigating about stuff that happens on the weekends?" asked student Kimbrielle Johnson. "If it happens at school, OK yeah, they should investigate, but stuff that happens on the weekends, kids will be kids."
