Nine People Shot on South Side

Nine people were wounded -- three critically -- during a Monday night shooting outside a Chicago Transit Authority bus turnaround near a Southwest Side Catholic high school.

Police said someone in the area of West 79th Street and South Western Avenue started spraying bullets where the Route 49 bus turns around to head north.

Two people were taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, one person was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and two people each were taken in good-to-fair condition to Christ Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital.

The shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. and less than a block from St. Rita High School, at 7740 S. Western Ave.

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis told reporters at the scene that the incident appeared to be gang-related, the Chicago Tribune reported.

No other information about the victims is available at this time.
