CTA Says Happy New Year With Fare Hike

Happy New Year. Oh, and it's gonna cost you an extra quarter if you plan to take the bus or train in 2009.

That Chicago Transit Authority fare increase goes into effect today.

The CTA says fares will rise 25 cents on most rides starting. Bus fares will rise from $1.75 to $2 and rail fares will go up to $2.25 from $2.

Prices also will increase on the CTA's one-day, three-day, weekly and 30-day passes. Weekly passes will go up $3 to $23 and it will cost $86 for a 30-day pass, up $11.

The CTA also will stop selling two-day and five-day passes.
