Students at the College of DuPage returned to classes Monday following a bomb threat that temporarily shut down the Glen Ellyn campus.
Evening classes were canceled Monday after the institution received a bomb threat, the school's officials said. Local, county and federal law enforcement were immediately mobilized along with several bomb sniffing dog teams.
Buildings on the campus, west of Chicago, were evacuated within minutes, but the search police conducted took hours. An all-clear was given late Monday night.
The "police department took the call saying that there were a number of bookbags with bombs in them spread around campus that were about to explode," the university's interim acting president Joe Collins said.
Authorities said they acted out of an abundance of caution after last week's massacre at an Oregon college.
"It's sad, just this afternoon we did a memorial service for Umpqua Community College," Collins said, adding that the tragedy "hit close to home."
