Lanes Reopen After Fiery Semi Crash Closes Westbound I-80/94

The truck was heading westbound on I-80/94 near Chase Street about 2 a.m. when it hit a crash cushion and started on fire

Two lanes of the westbound Borman Expressway have reopened during Tuesday’s morning commute after a semi crashed and caught fire hours earlier near Gary, Indiana.

The truck was heading westbound on I-80/94 about a mile west of the Grant Street exit at 1:08 a.m. when it hit a crash cushion and a cement pillar, went airborne and came to rest across the right, right middle and left middle lanes under the Chase Street overpass, according to Indiana State Police. It then caught fire.

The driver managed to get out of the truck before it was fully engulfed in flames and was not injured, state police said. Both the semi and its trailer, which was loaded with auto parts, were a “total loss.”

The two left lanes had reopened as of 7:51 a.m., state police said. The right two lanes remain closed for removal and cleanup of the semi, is load and the roadway. It is unknown when those lanes will reopen.

Commuters are advised to seek alternate routes because of long delays in the area.
