A leaking garbage truck is believed to be the cause of what police described Tuesday as an overpowering smell permeating Lower Wacker Drive.
A hazardous materials response was called at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the 100 block of North Wacker Drive after police received several calls about the strong stench, News Affairs said.
The scene was secured by 1:30 p.m. and nothing was found, fire officials said.
Chicago police and fire departments working together to investigate the odor said they believe a garbage truck may have leaked while driving on Lower Wacker, causing the odor.
There were no closures or evacuations during the investigation.
It's not known how soon the smell will clear up.
