A ground stop was issued for planes arriving at Chicago airports Thursday afternoon as storms were forecast to be moving into the area.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration and the Chicago Department of Aviation, a ground stop was in effect for traffic arriving at O'Hare International Airport. A ground stop was later issued at Midway Airport for arriving traffic as well, the FAA reported.
As of 1:30 p.m., more than 150 flights had been canceled at O'Hare. Delays of up to 30 minutes were also reported for departing flights. At Midway, only five flights had been canceled with delays averaging about 15 minutes.
Thunderstorms were likely Thursday afternoon and evening across the area, some of which could become severe.
The storms bring with them the threat for damaging winds, heavy rain and hail.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms were expected to move in during the early afternoon hours, growing more numerous and possibly severe later in the afternoon and evening.
They are expected to move east and out of the area by the early morning hours Friday as temperatures drop.
Friday looks to stay much cooler and less humid, with highs in the upper-60s and low-70s. The threat for rain showers will return again Saturday night and into Sunday.
