Interstate 94 was shut down in both directions and residents were being evacuated Wednesday in Porter County, Indiana as a massive semi fire prompted a hazmat situation.
Indiana State Police said a semi tanker crashed just after 5 a.m. near SR-249, shutting down the roadway from U.S. 20 to Ripley.
No injuries were initially reported but police said a corrosive material was inside the tanker. Further details on what that material was were immediately clear.
Authorities were evacuating the area within a half-mile radius.
The interstate was expected to be closed for more than an hour, authorities said. Just before 7 a.m., however, eastbound lanes began reopening.
