Interstate 55 northbound lanes were shut down temporarily at Martin Luther King Drive Thursday afternoon after a car fire turned into a hit-and-run accident, according to Illinois State Police.
Authorities say a vehicle was traveling northbound on I-55 around 1 p.m. when it was engulfed in flames near Martin Luther King Drive.
When the driver got out of the vehicle, they were struck by another car on the road, which then drove off after hitting the driver.
All lanes of traffic on I-55 northbound at Martin Luther King Drive were expected to be shut down for the several hours, police said in statement.
Officials have asked commuters to find an alternate route while crews work at the scene. Information on the offender in the hit-and-run was not immediately available.
As of 4 p.m. the lanes were being re-opened.
