A man was shot in the neck while walking near a busy intersection in Lakeview Monday night.
Police say it was around 8:30 p.m. when someone approached and shot a seemingly innocent man, believed to be a resident in the area, who was walking in an alley near a BP gas station located at the busy intersection of West Belmont and North Racine Avenues.
One man, Nicholas Notorangelo, told NBC 5 he was in the area when he heard the gunshots ring out.
“I came tearing out of my alley running east,” Notorangelo said, who was the first to arrive to the scene.
The victim was described to be in his upper 20s, wearing flip-flops and carrying a Powerade when he was gunned down. Notorangelo said the man was still holding his drink when he was found lying on his back on the ground with the gunshot wound to his neck.
Notorangelo and another good Samaritan applied first aid and called 911. When officers arrived, the victim was transported to Illinois Masonic in critical condition, according to police.
The porch just above where the victim was found hosted a CAPS meeting to address residents' concerns over a recent spike in crime in the neighborhood just weeks ago.
