Mayor Emanuel Says Rauner's State Budget is “Wrong Approach”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's proposed budget is the "wrong approach" for Illinois, and he's in communication with top Democratic leaders about it.

Emanuel told reporters Wednesday that he spoke to Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Mike Madigan regarding the spending plan. Emanuel predicts the cuts Rauner wants would impact many and says the governor should instead incorporate reforms, such as closing corporate tax loopholes.

Rauner outlined a budget last month that includes deep cuts to Medicaid, transportation and local governments. He says Illinois has been on a path of "financial recklessness" for too long.

Emanuel's comments come as many social service and advocacy groups have objected to the proposed spending plan.

Emanuel is being challenged for re-election by Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia.
