Three children were removed from their Northwest Indiana home this week after police found them living in unhealthy conditions, officials said.
A woman called Portage police after seeing one of the children walking alone in the street Monday morning, according to The Times of Northwest Indiana. Police told the publication the house was in disarray, with insects crawling and dirty dishes and alcohol containers everywhere. The temperature inside was nearly 90 degrees, they said.
The Times of Northwest Indiana reports police found two adults asleep in the basement. The father, Brandon Wise, was in the laundry room. His wife, Eileen, arrived home soon after and began yelling at police when she discovered them.
The parents were charged with child neglect. The other two adults, Kyle Witten and Jasmine Hernandez, face other charges.
Child welfare authorities say the rescued children have health problems, so they were removed from the home.
