Addie, a 6-month-old pup from northwest suburban McHenry, is lucky to be alive after bearing puncture wounds and dozens of stitches in an attack by two pit bulls earlier this week.
The dog's owners were taking Addie for a post-dinner walk when the first pit bull lunged onto the dog and wouldn't let go. Within seconds another dog arrived and latched onto the puppy.
"The terror in her face was unbelievable," Addie's owner, Annette Cuda, said.
Cuda raced over to help the dog, and in the process, one of the pit bulls bit her hand. Steven Cuda was knocked down in the battle, and his shoulder was disconnected.
"I actually thought they were going to kill her, they were that violent," Annette Cuda said. "They wouldn't let her go. I thought we were going to lose our puppy."
"It was terrifying," Steven Cuda said.
It happened near the pit bulls' home on the corner of Whiting and Tomlinson drives. Steven Cuda said his neighbors, especially those with young children, have been afraid to walk past the house.
"We had a difficult time surviving the situation," he said. "I can't imagine a 6- or 7-year-old kid who got attacked surviving under those circumstances."
Animal Control on Friday conducted a dangerous dog investigation. The Cudas said they don't just want the thousands of dollars in Addie's doctor's bills paid. They want the pit bulls out.
"I said to police and animal control, don't let a tragedy happen out here before you guys do something," he said.
