Relatives and other supporters of a Milwaukee man killed by a city police officer are attending a rally in Chicago with the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Jackson addressed a crowd of about 200 people Saturday at his Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters. Jackson said people and police need each other, and he called for an end to "all killing."
Former officer Christopher Manney, who is white, shot and killed Dontre Hamilton, who is black, in April. Last week Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm announced his decision not to file charges against Manney, saying the officer acted in self-defense.
Hamilton's family says the 31-year-old suffered from schizophrenia. Police Chief Edward Flynn fired Manney in October, saying Manney ignored department policy and treated Hamilton as a criminal by frisking him.
U.S. Attorney James Santelle also announced this week that federal investigators will look into the shooting.
In attendance at the rally were Hamilton's mother, father and brother, who spoke at the rally and said he stands with all families who have suffered injustice.
Demario Bailey's mother and twin brother also attended the rally. Delores Bailey said she supports the family and is now working to get a van to transport children to sports practices to keep them safe. Demario Bailey was killed earlier this month when he was shot during an attempted robbery while he was on his way to basketball practice with his brother.
