One person was killed and another injured in a house explosion in northwest suburban Mundelein Friday afternoon, officials said.
Fire crews responded to the scene in the 900 block of Killarney Pass Drive around noon, officials said.
A Mundelein Fire Department spokeswoman said a black cloud of smoke could be seen from the department.
Five suburban fire departments responded to the scene. Police confirmed one person was killed in the explosion and a man was injured.
Officials said three people were at the home at the time of the explosion. A man who was in the garage was killed, two others were either outside or inside the home and one of them was injured.
Officials said the injured man was listed in critical but stable condition.
The explosion blew out some of neighbor John Vicik's windows. Vicik said he ran outside to find out what happened and spotted his neighbor's son, who appeared to be dazed and confused.

"He couldn’t even talk really but something happened and then I saw the father laying on the other side of a red truck and he didn’t look good, he was laying on his back," Vicik said.
Mundelein Fire Chief Tim Sashko said the explosion is believed to have started in the garage, but officials aren't sure if a gas leak was to blame for the explosion.
"We do not know of any [gas] problems, North Shore has been out here," Sashko said. "We're trying to go through that layering process and figure out what was in the garage."
The cause of the explosion remained under investigation Friday.
