Severe Weather Threatens Chicago Area Thursday

Severe weather is possible in the Chicago area Thursday amid the hottest day of the week.

Isolated strong storms could develop in some spots heading into the afternoon and evening hours as temperatures rise into the upper-80s and low-90s across the metro area.

A light lake breeze will keep things slightly cooler along the lakefront and it's along this lake breeze that a couple of strong storms could fire up in 30 percent of the area, though this is not a certainty.

The Storm Prediction Center has areas north of Interstate 88 under a “slight risk” for severe weather, and areas south of I-88 in the lower “marginal risk” category.

The chance for scattered showers and storms grows more likely by the evening hours, bringing the possibility for some severe weather in far northern counties. The NBC 5 Storm Team will continue updating the forecast as the situation develops.

Any storms that do develop are expected to fade away by dawn.

Friday brings a warm and humid day with only a few isolated showers or storms possible as a cold front crosses the area in the afternoon and evening, but most areas should remain dry. Humidity levels will gradually fall later in the day and it will turn cooler along the lakefront.

The weekend should get off to a comfortable start with partly to mostly sunny skies, low humidity and highs around 80 degrees. Sunday brings the next chance for a few afternoon and evening showers and isolated storms with temps in the low- to mid-80s.
