Chicago Cubs infielder Addison Russell is heading to Triple-A Iowa after the team optioned him from its 25-man roster on Wednesday afternoon.
Russell, who was suspended for the first 40 games of the 2019 season after domestic violence allegations were levied against him by his ex-wife, was batting .247 with six home runs and 16 RBIs this season, and has been struggling at the plate and in the field for the North Siders.
In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs have activated catcher Willson Contreras from the 10-day injured list. Contreras has been dealing with a foot issue in recent weeks, and will now return to a roster in desperate need of additonal offense after two straight losses to the San Francisco Giants.
