With two teams looking to end lengthy World Series droughts in a Game 7 showdown at Progressive Field on Wednesday night, it isn’t surprising that tickets to the game between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians are in high demand, but what is surprising is where those tickets are being sold.
According to data released by online ticket broker StubHub, as much as 60 percent of ticket purchases for the winner-take-all game were located in the greater Chicago market.
“Game 7 is the ultimate bucket list experience for Cubs fans,” StubHub spokesman Cameron Papp said in a statement. “We are seeing an unprecedented amount of purchases from the greater Chicago market. As much as 60 percent of transactions for tonight’s game are from traveling Cubs fans.”
According to data released earlier this afternoon, the median price for a ticket into Game 7 was $1823, which would rank it among the highest-priced World Series tickets in history.
Google trends also show that support for (or at the very least, interest in) the Cubs isn't limited to Chicago. According to the search engine, more people in 49 of the 50 states searched for both "Chicago Cubs" and "Cubs tickets" in the past day and week, respectively. The one state bucking the trend is, of course, Ohio. [[399737041, C]]
The high ticket prices and massive demand are hardly surprising, given the length of the World Series droughts that both teams are hoping to end on Wednesday night. The Cubs haven’t won a championship in 108 years and haven’t had an opportunity to clinch one in 71, while the Indians haven’t won a World Series in 68 years.
