Just one day before runners will take to the streets for the 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, thousands of people from around the world took part in the International Chicago 5K.
About 6,000 runners from more than 100 countries participated in Saturday's race beginning at 7:30 a.m., organizers said.
Sponsored by Advocate Health Care, the race marked the second year Chicago hosted the 5K in addition to the marathon. It aims to "celebrate both Chicago's international zest and the allure of running in a world-class city."
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon announced plans in August to donate $2 to Advocate Children’s Hospital for every runner who crossed the finish line of the International Chicago 5K.
More than 2,700 participants crossed the finish line at last year's inaugural race, created to honor "Chicago’s global and cultural diversity."
The Chicago Marathon will take place on Oct. 8, featuring thousands of runners from more than 100 countries and all 50 states.
