Here's Where You Can Drop Off Your Mail-in Ballot Across the Chicago Area

NBCUniversal Media, LLC

If you've requested to vote by mail but want to personally hand deliver your ballot to make sure it gets to your local election authority in time to be counted, there are several locations where you can drop it off across the Chicago area.

More than 2 million people in Illinois have applied to vote by mail.

Voters have until Oct. 29 to request a mail ballot, though election officials advise you apply much earlier, preferably by Oct. 15 in order to allow for sufficient time for the ballot to arrive and be returned. To be counted, your mail-in ballot must be postmarked by Election Day.

If you requested to vote by mail but would prefer to vote in person, you can do so by surrendering that mail-in ballot to an election judge for cancellation at an early voting site or your polling place, then casting your ballot there in person.

The Illinois State Board of Elections issued a warning once early voting opened: If you have already requested to vote by mail, do not to attempt to vote early in person before your ballot arrives.

If you did not receive your mail-in ballot, you can vote in person by signing an affidavit that you did not receive it or were informed by your election authority that they did not receive your ballot in the mail.

But if you complete your mail-in ballot at home and want to bypass the U.S. Postal Service to return it, you can only bring your ballot to one of the locations listed for your county - do not put it in a drop box for a different election authority!

Anyone who is not yet registered to vote can do so online here through 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 18, or in person at several locations like government offices and public libraries up to 27 days before the election.

Beginning Oct. 7, voters can register in person at any of the early voting locations using grace period registration but must be prepared to cast their ballots at the same time. Those wishing to do so are required to bring two forms of ID, one of which has the voter's current address.

If you choose to forego both voting by mail and early voting, and just want to vote on Election Day, unless you are in Chicago and Cook County, you will only have one option: your designated polling place, which you can find on your local election authority's website.

You can find every mail-in ballot drop box location across Illinois here. Locations where you can drop off your mail-in ballot across the Chicago area are as follows:

City of Chicago
