Suburban Freshman's Buzzer-Beater up for an ESPY Award

It was already ESPN's top play of the day, but now a suburban basketball player's unbelievable buzzer-beater may be crowned the best play of the year.

ESPN unveiled its nominations for the "Best Play" category of the network's annual ESPY Awards, and Evanston Township High School freshman Blake Peters' incredible shot is one of 16 highlights up for the title.

Peters' shot happened in a January game against Maine South High School.

He grabbed a rebound from a missed free throw and with less than three seconds left, heaved the ball one-handed nearly the entire length of the court.

That last-ditch effort somehow found the net 80 feet away, launching the Wildkits to a 45-44 victory.

Fans naturally stormed the court, and it earned the distinction of being SportsCenter’s number one play of the day.

Now, in order to win the ESPY Award, it's up to fan voting. Fans can vote bracket-style on ESPN's website, where Peters is facing off in the first round against a New York high schooler's last-second steal and shot.

The eight plays that receive the most votes of all 16 - which include plenty of other buzzer-beaters, bicycle kicks, dunks and more - will advance to the next round.

The winner will be crowned at the ESPY Awards live on July 18.
