Boy Loses Leg After Being Hit by Metra Train

Boy was hit by an inbound train at the Burr Oak station, near 127th Street and Winchester Avenue, at about 7:25 a.m.

An 11-year-old boy lost one leg on Tuesday morning when he was struck by an inbound train on Metra’s Electric line in Blue Island.

A Metra official told NBC Chicago the boy, whose name was not publicly released as of  10:45 a.m., was trying to beat the train at 127th Street and Winchester Avenue when he was struck at about 7:25 a.m.

A witness told police the boy was running toward the track and appeared to run up the platform but instead crossed the tracks and was hit. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to a police officer.

The collision delayed and canceled some service on the line. Updated schedule information was posted to MetraRail.com.

Passengers were urged to consider using the Rock Island train line. The Vermont Street station is located at 2300 W. Grove Street.
