Teen Killed, Another Wounded in Shooting at Basketball Tournament Brawl: Police

Police said a boy between the ages of 11 and 13 was taken into custody in connection with the shooting

A teenage boy was killed and another wounded when a basketball game turned into a brawl in which a young boy opened fire Thursday night, according to police.

Authorities said the incident took place at a Chicago Park District field house located in the first block of North Central Park Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the city's West Side.

At around 9:10 p.m., officers responded to a large fight inside the field house during a basketball tournament, officials said.

When the officers arrived, they started to disperse the crowd when shots were fired outside and two males were struck, according to police.

Officials said a 15-year-old boy was shot in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified him as Kenwon Parker, of the 3700 block of West Polk Street in the Homan Square neighborhood.

A 14-year-old boy sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, according to police.

A boy between the ages of 11 and 13 was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered at the scene, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet.

The shooting left many stunned, particularly at the ages of the people involved.

"This violence has got to quit man, because our kids can’t even play no more," witness Johnny Robinson said.

It was not clear if or when charges would be filed, as authorities continue to investigate.
