Illinois Congressman Danny Davis on Monday clarified reports that his office had received a threatening email.
He said the message, received Sunday, came from someone who was warning him that he might be in danger from another group. The message itself was not threatening, he said.
"The group that [the sender was] talking about is a group of individuals who go to public meetings [and] oftentimes confront legislators and other people... There have been restraining orders put out on them and I guess he's been saying that unless something happens, they could provoke violence," Davis said Monday from Springfield.
Davis was in Illinois' capitol city for the inaugural festivities.
The message, which reportedly said, "Danny Davis is next," was presumably referring to Saturday's shooting in Tucson, Ariz. that killed six people and wounded 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
Davis' office said it has notified authorities about the threatening email.
Several Illinois politicians have decried Saturday's shooting and have offered up their prayers and sympathies.
