Play Ball? Cubs Say Yes

Game delayed until 2:30 p.m.

Weather conditions in the "Friendly Confines" are less than friendly today for the Cubs' home opener, but it didn't stop the first pitch from being thrown out at Wrigley Field today.

The team delayed the start of its first home game until 2:30 p.m., at which point, the rain having subsided slightly, the Cubs and Rockies took to the field.

"The weather comes and goes in Chicago fairly quickly as far as change in forecasts," manager Lou Piniella is quoted by the Chicago Tribune as saying. "You don't really want to play if it's going to be really, really cold and rainy and it's going to be delayed and stopped.

The chilly, soggy and breezy forecast is likely to make the game against the Colorado Rockies less than a spectator's dream come true, but a packed crowd gathered in hats, coats and blankets. Temperatures are not expected to climb above the low 40s.

Last week, snow forced the cancellation of the Sox home opener, the first time foul weather delayed a home opener since 1982.
