A four-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 near Pontiac left one person dead Thursday afternoon.
A vehicle traveling south on I-55 crossed a center median and hit another vehicle head on around 4:30 p.m., authorities said. The vehicle that was hit head on then struck another vehicle, sending that car crashing into a fourth vehicle.
The driver of the car that crossed the median was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Jason Bradley with the Illinois State Police. A second person was taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
Traffic was diverted to Route 116 while the crash was investigated. Part of northbound I-55 near mile maker 201 remained closed as of 5 p.m.
