Keep your umbrella close all day and don't forget a poncho if you're headed to Lollapalooza, as periods of scattered showers and thunderstorms persist on and off across the Chicago area.
After stormy overnight conditions and a rainy Friday morning, the day will see many dry hours in between rain, but isolated severe storms and heavy rain are possible later this afternoon and evening.
The National Weather Service reports some storms may produce occasional cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential downpours, strong gusts of up to 55 mph and penny-size hail.
Some scattered storms developing across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana in the afternoon could be strong with a few reaching severe limits, according to the NWS.
Models show very heavy rain could continue into the evening, making flash flooding a threat in some areas, especially in central Illinois. Storms likely will taper off then end around midnight.
The weekend forecast predicts a mostly rain-free couple of days. Saturday likely will become partly to mostly sunny, cooler and less humid with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s.
Much of the same is expected Sunday with less wind and highs in the mid-70s.
The chance for isolated showers returns late Monday into Tuesday and partway through the week.
