Chicago Says Farewell to Congressman Rosty

Rostenkowski died last week in his Wisconisin home

Former Congressman Dan Rostenkowski is being remembered as a political giant whose roots in his Chicago area district were deep.

Hundreds of mourners, including Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and New York Congressman Charles Rangel, attended Tuesday's funeral Mass at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. It's the city's first Polish church and where Rostenkowski was baptized, confirmed and attended services for his 82 years.

It's also the church Rostenkowski is credited with helping save when an interstate was built decades ago. At Rostenkowski's recommendation, the freeway route was altered around the church.

Monsignor Ken Velo says the area could be called "Rostenkowski's curve."

The Chicago Democrat died last week of lung cancer.
