Target is closing two locations in Chicago next year, the company announced.
The stores, both on the city’s South Side, are slated to close on Feb. 2 after the company evaluated each store’s performance.
The locations include the Morgan Park Target at 11840 S. Marshfield Ave., and the Chatham neighborhood location at 8560 S. Cottage Grove Ave.
The Marshfield Avenue store first opened in 2008 and has 115 full- and part-time employees. The Cottage Grove Avenue location opened in 2002 and has 120 full- and part-time employees.
The company said “eligible store team members will be offered the option to transfer to a different store in their area.” If they decline to transfer, they will instead receive a separation package based on their employment within the company.
“These decisions are really difficult they’re not taken lightly,” said Target spokesperson Jacqueline Debuse.
Debuse said the company evaluates store performance each year and typically chooses to close a location “after several years of declining profitability.”
The company owns both locations and will be selling the buildings, she said.
