Shooting Suspect Shot and Killed by Chicago Police During SWAT Standoff

An investigation was underway Sunday after a shooting suspect was fatally shot by Chicago police officers during a barricade situation near the Ford City shopping center, police said. NBC 5’s Christian Farr reports.

A gunman who allegedly shot two people and opened fire at police was shot and killed by officers during a barricade situation at an apartment complex near Chicago's Ford City shopping center on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

According to authorities, officers were called to the 4200 block of West Ford City Drive at approximately 1:15 p.m. after a woman was shot. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect opened fire at police. None of the gunfire struck officers, according to officials.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside of a residence, prompting SWAT teams to respond to the area. Officers attempted "negotiations and de-escalation techniques" with the gunman, according to a news release from the Chicago Police Department.

At one point, officers discharged their weapons, striking the unidentified offender. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center and pronounced dead.

The account of the shooting provided by police hasn't been independently verified by NBC 5.

The female victim,48 years old, was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center and listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the neck, according to authorities. A second person, a 78-year-old man, was taken hostage and shot by the gunman, Chicago police said. He was also listed in critical condition at the hospital.

As is protocol with officer-involved shootings, the officers who fired the shots will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation by COPA, Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
