A head-on crash at Archer and Spaulding killed 1 person and hurt 5 others. The wreck was so violent, the engines from one of the cars was flung 50 feet away.

One person is dead and five others were injured early Sunday in a two-vehicle crash in the South Side Brighton Park neighborhood.

The head-on crash happened at 2 a.m. at South Archer and South Spaulding avenues, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Police say a speeding car hit something before it crashed into an oncoming car.  Fifty feet away from one of the wrecked vehicles, police found its engine.

Four people were in critical condition, and two others suffered minor injuries.  They were taken to area hospitals including John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Mount Sinai Hospital and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva.
