One person died and another person was seriously injured in a fire at an apartment building on Chicago's Northwest Side early Wednesday.

The fire took place at around 3:54 a.m. in the 6400 block of Belle Plaine Avenue in the city's Dunning neighborhood, according to fire officials.

The blaze broke out on the fifth floor of the building and was contained to one apartment, authorities said.

First responders rescued two people - an elderly man and woman - from the building, according to the Chicago Fire Department. They were taken to Community First Medical Center where the man, who was in his 80s, was pronounced dead, officials said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office did not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including his identity, were not available.

The woman was in serious-to-critical condition, officials said.

Twenty other people were displaced as firefighters battled the blaze, according to CFD. The fire was put out and residents were allowed back into the building just before 6 a.m., authorities said.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist those impacted by the fire. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
