A man was killed and a woman hurt when a car slammed into a light pole Saturday afternoon on Lake Shore Drive in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
A Dodge Neon struck the pole in the 5300 block of South Lake Shore Drive at 12:12 p.m., police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.
The car was northbound when the wreck occurred, and the road was wet, according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
A 20-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle, as well as a male passenger were both injured and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where the passenger later died, Ursitti said.
The passenger was identified as Anthony Smith, 22, who was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:23 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
The woman was cited for not having insurance, according to Perez, who declined to release her name because the investigation is ongoing.
It remained unknown late Sunday morning what caused the wreck.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
