A blaze broke out at an apartment building Friday night and then spread to two other buildings in the Logan Square neighborhood on the North West Side, officials said.
"We heard someone say 'Fire! Fire!' Then we called 9-1-1," said Mohammad Masoud, who was sitting in a nearby Starbucks with his friend when they heard the yells for help.
Firefighters were notified about 10:30 p.m. that a three-story brick building near the intersection of West Logan Boulevard and North California Avenue was on fire, according to Fire Media Affairs.
"It start off with one house and then spread off to three houses," said Manuel Rivera, who was driving on California Avenue towards Logan Boulevard when traffic was stopped for emergency crews battling the fire. He became trapped in traffic and exited his car to watch firefighters battle the flames.
The fire spread to a nearby two-and-a-half frame building and then headed west to a three-story brick building, Fire Media Affairs said.
"It was pretty big," said Rivera. "You could feel the heat"
Firefighters extinguished the fire about an hour later, Fire Media Affairs said.
No injuries were reported, but at least three residents were displaced.
The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago responded to the fire scene and provided food and shelter for three people who lived in one unit of the apartment building, Red Cross spokeswoman Martha Carlos said. Residents of two other units were able to get assistance from friends and family, Carlos said.
