76-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot on Far South Side

The man was in the 13200 block of South Riverdale Avenue in the city’s Golden Gate neighborhood around noon when someone shot him

A 76-year-old man was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon on Chicago’s Far South Side.

Darrell Cannon said he found his brother Claude dead on Tuesday morning in the house that the two shared on the far South Side.

Claude Cannon suffered gunshot wounds to the face and buttocks and was pronounced dead at the home in the 13200 block of South Riverdale Avenue in the city’s Golden Gate neighborhood, according to authorities.

"To come in and see your brother laying there with a bullet in his head, in a fetal position as if he was praying," said brother Darrell Cannon. "I ain't never seen anything like that before in my life and I doubt seriously if that picture will ever leave my brain."

"It didn't appear that there was a break-in, nothing is missing, or anything like that," Darrell Cannon said.

Neighbors said they heard the gunshots.

"I heard maybe five or six shots," said Iona Brown, who knew Claude Cannon for 50 years. "He didn't bother nobody, I don't know why someone would want to take his life."

Cannon worked as a limousine driver in his younger years. He leaves behind two adult children, and many grandchildren.

"To all those who have lost a loved one, the survivors," Darrell Cannon said. "I am now in their club of having lost mine. It's a club I hope and pray nobody else has to join."

A homicide investigation is ongoing.
