A Chicago Fire soccer player was injured when a truck crashed into his vehicle and the driver fled the scene.
The crash happened just before 9:30 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Harlem Avenue, when a box truck hit two vehicles, causing one of them to roll over, according to authorities.
The driver of the truck drove from the scene onto Interstate 55, police said, but damage from the accident caused the vehicle to break down.
Two people inside attempted to flee on foot, but both were taken into custody, officials said. One of the suspects tried to jump into the Illinois and Michigan Canal, according to police.
One person in a vehicle hit by the truck in the crash was injured and taken to MacNeal Hospital in good condition.
According to the Secretary of State's Office, a 2013 Volkswagon that was hit by the truck belongs to Johan Kappelhof, a defender for the Chicago Fire.
The Chicago Fire Soccer Club confirmed the player, who was on his way to practice at the time, was injured in the crash, but not badly. He was treated and released from the hospital, team officials said, noting that he showed no sign of concussion.
