As the Chicago area prepares for a wet and snowy Halloween that could spell trouble for trick-or-treaters, at least one suburb is simply moving its holiday festivities altogether.
The Village of Vernon Hills announced Tuesday that it would reschedule trick-or-treating from Thursday to 2-5 p.m. on Saturday.
"Due to the forecast of inclement weather and anticipated accumulations of up to 3” inches of snow, the village is concerned for the safety of children crossing streets when traffic conditions will be at their worst," the village said in a message to residents. "Therefore, authorized hours for trick-or-treating will be moved from the traditional day of Halloween."
Thursday's forecast looks to be wet for much of the day with rain transitioning to snow for some suburbs and possibly even in the city, though timing will depend largely on winds and temperatures across the area. Accumulation is expected in some locations.
Highs Thursday are expected to sit in the upper-30s and low-40s for most.
Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for several counties in the southwestern suburbs overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, and Livingston counties, and will go into effect at midnight. The advisory is set to last through 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Forecasts are calling for wet snow to fall across the area, with accumulations of 2 to 3 inches in the counties under the advisory. Up to four inches could fall in some locations, according to the weather service.

Far northeastern counties in Illinois are also expected to get some snow in the overnight hours, but in smaller amounts, as 1 to 2 inches are expected in some locations.
