A man who fell to his death from a high-rise luxury hotel in Chicago Monday was taking pictures at the time, a source in touch with investigators confirmed Tuesday.
Eric Paul Janssen, 44, “accidentally” fell from the 23rd floor of LondonHouse in the 0-100 block of East Wacker Drive at about 3:45 p.m., authorities said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his death was ruled an accident, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Police said Janssen was working on the building at the time, though they could not say what type of work, while hotel management said he was not an employee of the hotel.
"Officials at the hotel are working with the Chicago Police Department and other first responders regarding the death of a man who apparently fell from a 20th floor parapet wall to the sixth floor rooftop earlier this afternoon," said George Jordan, senior vice president for LondonHouse. "He was not an employee at the hotel. No further information is available at this time. We offer our condolences."
The source said Janssen "climbed over a barrier to an unprotected area of the roof to take pictures, where he eventually fell to the 6th floor."
Area Central Detectives are conducting a death investigation.
