Son Killed, Mother Wounded in Shooting at Harvey Gas Station

The teen, identified as 17-year-old Juwan Benson, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said

A 17-year-old boy was killed and his mother was critically wounded in a shooting Saturday afternoon inside a south suburban Harvey gas station.

Security video from the gas station, near Wood Street and Sibley Boulevard, shows a man opening fire into the crowded store at about 3:45 p.m.

The slain teen, identified as 17-year-old Juwan Benson, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. His mother, Shieka Coleman, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

"He took his last breath and he was gone. My daughter was trying to ease her way over to him but she couldn't make it to her son," Coleman's mother, Shirley Coleman, said through tears on Monday.

Benson lived in the 100 block of West Sibley Boulevard, fewer than two blocks from the shooting, according to a spokesperson in the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Harvey police on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Earl Truss, the man who they say shot Benson and his mother. Witnesses at the scene told police that Benson got into an argument with Truss at the entrance of the gas station just prior to the shooting.

"This was not a random act on the gas station,” said Harvey police spokesman Sean Howard. "We think these individuals may have been targeted by the shooter.”

Benson's brother, Edward McGee, said the shooting may have stemmed from a disagreement about a female.

Police did not release the surveillance video from the store. It was posted online.
