A Chicago alderman is in favor of banning cigarettes sales to individuals under the age of 21.
George Cardenas (12th) -- who also chairs the city's Health Committee-- believes raising the legal smoking age from 18 to 21 will help lower the rates of teenage smokers, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Cardenas' comments came shortly after a New York City politician suggested the same plan for that city.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel wouldn't specifically comment on the issue, telling the newspaper he wasn't familiar with the New York plan.
An effort to raise the smoking age from 18 to 19 in 2005 failed.
Last year, Cardenas proposed banning the sale of energy drinks to anyone under the age of 21.
