Brawl Breaks Out After High School Basketball Game

When the two teams were supposed to shake hands a fight broke out

A northwest suburban basketball team may not be able to play in a regional championship game Friday after the team was involved in a post-game brawl Tuesday.

The Illinois High School Association is expected to decide Friday morning if Rockford’s Jefferson High School will be eligible to play Huntley Friday after a fight broke out on the court of their semi-final game against East High School, according to NBC affiliate WREX.

The Boys Basketball Regional Semi-final game was won by Jefferson in a last-second shot, but when the two teams were supposed to shake hands a fight broke out, as seen in video captured at the game.

Rockford Public Schools Director of Athletics, Matt Parker, called the students’ behavior “completely unacceptable,” and told WREX that players involved were already punished.

Rockford Public Schools said discipline will be handed down following the melee, WREX reports, but the question remains if players will still be eligible.
