Multiple streets were closed surrounding the Harlem Irving Plaza shopping mall in suburban Norridge on Monday afternoon after a vehicle fell from a parking garage.

An elderly woman escaped serious injury on Monday afternoon after her vehicle fell from a second-story parking garage at the Harlem Irving Plaza shopping mall in suburban Norridge.

A photo posted on social media at 1:07 p.m. showed a car upside down, adjacent to a parking garage, while first responders surrounded the vehicle. Nearby streets were closed for multiple hours.

According to Lt. Ronald Schneider, of the North Park Fire Protection District, a woman driving a vehicle somehow went over the edge of a parking garage, fell approximately 20 feet and landed on the roof. Firefighters pulled the woman from the vehicle after approximately a half hour.

"We were definitely concerned with her well being but she was in good spirits, and we were able to get her out," Schneider said.

What caused the vehicle to plunge from the parking garage is unclear.
