City Honors Singer Sam Cooke with Street

The city of Chicago plans to honor soul singer Sam Cooke with his own street.

City officials will rename a section of 36th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue "Sam Cooke Way" during a Saturday afternoon ceremony. Cooke once lived near the street location in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood.

Cooke sang chart topping hit songs during the 1950s and 1960s like "You Send Me," ''Wonderful World" and "Twistin' the Night Away." He's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Local officials and members of Cooke's family are expected to attend the event, which will be presided over by Chicago Blues Museum founder Gregg Parker.

Cooke was born in Mississippi. His family moved to Chicago in the 1930s. He died in 1964.
