Chicago-Area Marine Killed in San Diego Hit-and-Run

The Chicago Transit Authority plans to keep trains running on a normal schedule Wednesday evening despite the extreme cold brought on by the polar vortex.

Authorities say a Chicago-area Marine was killed in a hit-and-run crash in San Diego, California, Saturday evening.

Victor Molinar, 18, was in the city's Midway District with friends at around 7 p.m. PST when he became separated from his group, according to police.

His friends found him in the street, officials said, and the debris trail suggested he had been hit by one or more cars. Molinar, of suburban Oak Park, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Molinar was a "poolee," someone who has enlisted but not yet gone through basic training, before he became a recruit in San Diego, a sergeant at the Oak Park Marines Recruiting Office told NBC San Diego.

Police said investigators were checking surveillance video at nearby establishments, and were looking for a gold SUV with front-end damage.

Anyone with any information about the crash was urged to contact San Diego Police at (619) 531-2000 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
