Fire crews responding to a house fire in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood early Thursday morning said they were hampered by frozen fire hydrants.
Crews were called to a three-story building on the on the 4000 block of South Calumet Avenue around 12:30 a.m., fire department spokesman Will Knight said.
Fire hydrants on the block were frozen, so firefighters had to use the water supply from their trucks, 5th District Fire Deputy Chief Jeffrey Horan said at the scene. The trucks carry about 500 gallons of water.
The fire started in the eight-unit building’s back porch and basement of the building, which had no working fire detectors, Horan said.
The fire was confined to that part of the building and it was struck out by 1:45 a.m., officials said.
One family who lived in the basement may have been displaced, Horan said.
No injuries were reported, and an exact cause was not known as of 5 a.m.
